HEC or HPMC in water-based paints: what changes in the formulation
Both are cellulose ethers, but ionic compatibility, flow behaviour and film properties point to different choices in architectural coatings.

HEC is non-ionic and widely used in emulsion paints because it is tolerant of the ionic species found in pigment dispersions. HPMC offers different surface activity and can improve open time, but formulators should confirm compatibility with the binder system.
